Manchester City’s goalkeeper Ederson has expressed his disbelief when he heard new Brazil head-coach Ramon Menezes has opted not to take Alisson to the national squad.
The Liverpool goalkeeper has been first-choice ever since 2016, bagging 61 caps to his name and lifting Copa America in 2019.
But the Brazil’s 23-man squad that was announced on Saturday did not feature Alisson.
Ederson, who currently has 19 caps for the national team, was taken aback from the decision but when asked he underlined that is too early to say whether he has become the first-choice in the long run.
“The first moment I saw the list I was surprised, but it’s the coach’s decision. They are choices, I thought he would be on the list, but he was not.” Ederson said.
“I do not know why, if it is a matter of opportunities for younger players. But we have to work, give our best, every day there is a good new player who can take that responsibility too.”
“I think it’s too early for that [talk of him being number one]. Of course it is always important to start a cycle, for me it is no different and I hope to start in the best way possible.”
Alisson has endured a difficult season with his team Liverpool stuck in 6th place and desperately fighting for a top four finish, after the Merseyside team were knocked out both in the Champions League and the FA Cup.
