The Tampa Bay Rays have announced on Monday that their closer Pete Fairbanks will be added on the IL for 15 days due to left hip inflammation.
Fairbanks picked up the injury in Sunday’s game and feels generally fine, but the Tampa Bay would not risk his fitness and henceforth are giving him a two weeks rest.
Manager Kevin Cash has said that he is in contact with Fairbanks and the 29-year-old is in decent shape despite being sore.
“We’re not gonna replace Pete,” Cash said. “He’s really, really good. What he does at the back end of the bullpen when he’s right and healthy is pretty special. We feel like we do have some guys that can provide some help, and if we can continue to score runs at the clip we are now, that’ll help, too.”
Fairbanks is not unfamiliar with this type of injury as he sit out on the 15-days IL eralier this month due to right forearm inflammation.
The Rays will put Trevor Kelley from Triple-A-Durham in his place.
