FIFA’s disciplinary committee has initiated an investigation into alleged breaches of its rules by the Israel Football Association (IFA), following a proposal by the Palestinian Football Association (PFA).
The PFA has accused the IFA of “violations of FIFA regulations,” particularly concerning discrimination, and has called for sanctions, including Israel’s suspension from international football. This proposal comes in the context of the ongoing war in Gaza.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue, stating that FIFA had conducted due diligence and followed the advice of independent experts. Infantino emphasized the need for peace in the region, saying, “We urge all parties to restore peace to the region with immediate effect.”
FIFA’s council has mandated two investigations into the IFA, with the first focused on discrimination allegations within its national league. The outcome of these investigations could have significant implications for the future participation of Israel’s teams and clubs in international competitions.
Due to ongoing security concerns, Israel has been playing its Nations League home matches in Hungary. This arrangement follows the relocation of an away game against Belgium last month, also due to security issues. As the conflict in the region continues, these logistical adjustments have been necessary to ensure the safety of players and fans.
Israel is scheduled to host France and play in Italy during the upcoming international break in October, though the security situation may affect these fixtures as well. It remains to be seen if further relocations will be needed depending on the circumstances at the time of the matches.
