Software will be used to turn on the rain lights automatically

Formula 1 is planning to test a new system for better visibility during a race on a wet track, RaceFans.net reports.

World Championship drivers will take part in a special test session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where they will test an automatic light system to be used in rainy weather. On a wet track, the red blinking lights at the back of the cars is the only reference point for the drivers to know where their opponents are as the visibility is low to none because of the spray lifted up into the air from the wet tires.

In recent months, FIA specialists have been working on solutions to this notorious problem. The idea for now is software to turn on the rain lights.

Until now, pilots had to manually activate the lights. This means in practice that there is sometimes a risk that they will not activate when track conditions get worse.
