Alejandro Garnacho’s ankle injury, he picked during the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, is worse than what it first seemed, reports from Argentina say.
The 18-year-old came on as a substitution in the 73th minute and was brought down to the ground in the 82nd minute by a strong, but fair challenge from Kyle Walker-Peters. The Argentinian wonderkid seemed in desperate agony as the medical staff were trying to ease off the pain, but miraculously stood on his feet and continued the game.
Head coach Erik Ten Hag decided against risking his player fitness and subbed him off in the 90th minute.
After the match the Dutchman expressed his belief that the injury does not look too bad.
Reports from Argentine TV station, however, suggest that the sprained ankle is actually worse than what it seemed at first. The medical tests show that Garnacho will be unable to take part in Argentina’s games against Panama and Curacao on March 23 and 28 respectively.
The news is a major blow to young Garnacho, as he was looking to make his debut for the national team, after being neglected by manager Lionel Scaloni for the 2022 World cup.
