The star of the show turned out to be the rookie Casey Schmitt, who had never had a start for the Giants previously. He would certainly remember his debut as he drove his first hit into a homerun to help his team en route to victory.
“I’m really excited that I was able to do that in front of the home crowd, doing it with my family as well,” he said. “It was really special.”
Mitch Haniger drove in two runs, while Logan Webb reduced the Nationals to only one run is seven innings. He also had 7 hits, allowing 9 and a one walk, pitching out of several jams.
Haniger gave San Francisco an early lead with a two-run double off Patrick Corbin in the first inning.
Dominic Smith provided the lone Nationals run on an RBI single in the sixth.
J.D. Davis added an insurance run for the Giants with an RBI single in the seventh to make it 4-1.
Camilo Doval pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save in nine chances.
