Mason Greenwood will not be taking part of Manchester United’s training until the next season at the very minimum as the club’s internal investigation about the striker’s rape accusations unlikely to start before the summer.
The 21-year old was suspended by the club back in January 2022 after accusations of rape and assault emerged and the young striker was arrested by the Greater Manchester Police. However, all charges were dropped last month and that has left Greenwood in talks with United about his future.
The striker has underlined his desire to continue playing for United with which he has a contract until 2025. The club, however, will not rush into any decisions yet, as it is faced with huge dilemma of how exactly to handle the situation.
A potential return for Greenwood might tarnish the club’s public image. That is why the board will not take any further steps at the moment, as the club is fully focused on its on-pitch duties, as they push for Europa League and FA Cup glory and are set for a top 4 finish which will book them a Champions League spot.
Sponsors Nike, EA Sports and Cadbury all dumped Greenwood after the allegations first emerged, whilst his shirt is no longer for sale, although his number 11 squad number has not been reallocated.
Manager Erik Ten Hag has remained silent on the matter and has constantly avoided discussions about Greenwood’s future, even though the Dutchman has spoken to the youngster. Ten Hag believes it is in the hand of the club’s hierarchy to decide whether to keep Greenwood or not.
