Houston finished 4-8 in its inaugural Big 12 campaign, which included a defeat against Rice in September and 3 consecutive losses to end the season. The Cougars finished 2-7 in the Big 12, with their victories coming in OT vs. Baylor and on a last-second, 49-yard TD vs. West Virginia.
Houston will owe Holgorsen nearly 15 million dollars in buyout money. Still, his contract features a mitigation clause that could lower the amount if he became a head coach in a different school.
“Throughout his 5 campaigns with the Cougars, Dana made strides in our football program in many aspects and laid the groundwork for our transition to the Big 12 Conference,” Houston’s athletic director shared after the news of Holgorsen’s dismissal.
