Horvat’s contract carries an $8.5 million average annual value against the salary cap.
He was in the final season of a six-year contract that carried a cap hit of $5.5 million and was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
The 27-year-old Canadian was acquired by the Islanders on Jan. 31 for a conditional first-round draft pick in 2023, forward Anthony Beauviller and prospect Aatu Raty.
Horvat, who served as the Canucks’ captain from 2019, will have a new contract with the Islanders before he has technically played as a member of the team.
His final regular-season game was Vancouver’s victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Jan. 27.
