The New York team came to live in the closing stages to claim victory

The New York Islanders trashed Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 to keep their playoff hopes alive and reduce their deficit to 2-1 on Friday night.

Quick goals in succession from Kyle Palmieri and Matt Martin in the third period helped the New York team prevail.

Caseu Cizikas, Scott Mayfield and Anders Lee were the other players, who put their name on the scoresheet as the Islanders run riot.

Goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves.

It was a pretty even game all round as the Carolina team put up a fight just like in their narrow wins in Game 1 and Game 2, but all of a sudden the New York team stepped on the gas and demolished their opponents late on in the game.

Jesper Fast was the sole scorer for the Hurricanes as goaltender Anti Raanta stopped 32 shots.
