The world No. 1 lost just four games in blistering performance to kick-off his title defense

Top seed Jannik Sinner opened his US Open title defense in emphatic fashion, dismantling Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in just under an hour and 40 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The defending champion looked sharp and energetic throughout his first match since retiring from the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz earlier this month.

Moving freely and striking with trademark precision, Sinner dictated rallies with depth and pace, leaving Kopriva with little chance in their first-ever Lexus ATP Head2Head clash.

Sinner, who has now claimed the last three hard-court majors — the 2024 and 2025 Australian Open titles and last year’s US Open crown — showed no signs of the physical setback that forced his Cincinnati withdrawal. His only pause came late in the third set, when he briefly received treatment on a finger issue before closing out the match without further difficulty.

With the victory, the Italian advanced to the second round, where he will face either Alexei Popyrin or Emil Ruusuvuori. Aiming for his fifth Grand Slam title and third of the season, Sinner remains firmly in the hunt for the world No. 1 ranking.
