After a 9-year separation, the New York Jets and QB Geno Smith are together again.
Instead of waiting for Geno to be cut, the NFL franchise from the Big Apple traded for him today. New York is sending this year’s 6th-round selection to the Raiders in exchange for Geno and this year’s 6th-round pick.
Geno was in New York’s facility in the morning and passed a physical.
The new addition will be the team’s starting QB, a position he held with the organization from 2013 to the 2015 preseason – until Smith was punched by a teammate in a locker room.
“I’m here where it all began,” Geno shared. “I’m very happy to connect with my new teammates and managers and everyone who works for the Jets, as I hope to build a new relationship with the supporters.”
If New York had waited for Smith to be cut tomorrow, they could have inked him for 1.3 million dollars, the veteran minimum. However, they would have faced competition from the Vikings, and that’s why the Jets decided to trade for him now.
