Next powerful move by Saudi Arabia’s royal family to win sports fans over to their side is to arrange a much-anticipated fight between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder in January 2024.
The news was announced by AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn in an interview before the former champion’s fight against Robert Helenius in London’s O2 Arena.
If everything goes according to plan and Joshua wins against the Finnish opponent, then the plan is to face Deontay Wyler in December or January. Representatives of the Saudis are in the English capital to negotiate about the clash in question in January, which will most likely take place in the city of Jeddah.
Saudi Arabia made a key breakthrough in boxing long before it tried the same in football – Joshua’s rematch with Andy Ruiz took place there, and since then a contract has been signed with the current holder of three of the four world titles, Alexander Usyk.
The Saudis even had a plan to organize a super tournament between the most famous fighters in the “royal” division, but it failed due to a number of reasons, including the dubious attitude of the fans.
