Daniil Medvedev was eliminated out of the Madrid Masters after losing to his compatriot Aslan Karatsev in two sets – 6:7 (1), 4:6, in one hour and 40 minutes of play.
Medvedev, seeded No. 2 in the main draw, started the match better and broke in the third game, but Karatsev responded with an instant rebreak. It came down to a tiebreak in which the Russian, ranked 121st in the world, gave only a point to his more famous opponent to take the lead in the parts.
In the second, Karatsev needed just one break, which came in the fifth game, to finish things off in his favor.
He lost just nine first serve points the entire match, saving three of four break opportunities against Medvedev. The two Russians finished with an equal number of unforced errors – 4 each, but the difference in winners was palpable in favor of Karatsev – 28 to 12. Karatsev will play the winner of the match between Taylor Fritz and China’s Zhuzhen Zhang in the quarterfinals.
