The Nets will receive Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and future picks in the reported deal, which comes only two days after Irving requested to be traded from Brooklyn ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Nets had several conversations on a potential deal, but the Nets preferred Dallas’ package that included getting a point guard and wing to add to the roster plus future draft picks, sources said.
Dallas general manager Nico Harrison has a long history with Irving, going back to their Nike days together.
The Mavericks coach Jason Kidd was also a proponent of the trade, with the team adding a second star next to Luka Doncic.
Irving was not part of the Nets’ squad for their game Saturday night, with the team saying he was injured and that he was excused from being at the arena.
Irving, who turns 31 in March, signed with his hometown team in 2019 with hopes of winning a title while playing alongside Kevin Durant.
But one saga followed another, highlighted by him having to miss almost the entire home schedule last season over his refusal to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Irving was also suspended for eight games earlier this season after the team said it was dismayed by his repeated failure to “unequivocally say he has no antisemitic beliefs” following his posting of a movie link on Twitter.
