Dallas Mavericks leader Kyrie Irving revealed he wants to compete for Team Australia and would be happy to gain eligibility in time to represent Australia at the upcoming Olympics in the USA.
Kyrie, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, answered questions during All-Star Weekend about whether he wanted to play for another country.
“Actually, that’s what’s going on at the moment,” the Mavs star answered. “Right now, I need to see what’s going to be the best route for me to be able to represent Team Australia. A lot of things must happen before that.”
Kyrie (32) played for Team USA at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and won the gold medal in Brazil. But Irving was not part of the past 2 rosters of the USA basketball at the Olympics.
For Irving to be part of the Boomers, he must get a positive answer from USA Basketball, FIBA, and Basketball Australia.
Dallas guard added that the USA Basketball Association must make a decision and that he hoped that, in the end, he would be able to compete at the Los Angeles Olympics.
