The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement to appoint JJ Redick as their next head coach, according to ESPN. Redick, who played 15 seasons in the NBA, has no prior coaching experience but was still chosen as the Lakers’ top target. He has been offered a four-year contract, though the financial details have not been disclosed.
Redick’s appointment comes after UConn coach Dan Hurley rejected a six-year, $70 million offer to move to the NBA. Hurley, a two-time reigning national champion with UConn, decided to remain in college basketball rather than transition to coaching in the NBA.
At 39, Redick co-hosts a basketball podcast with Lakers star LeBron James, which began last March. James, due to become a free agent at the start of the new league year, has the option to stay in Los Angeles by opting into a $51.4 million player option.

The Lakers decided to part ways with former head coach Darvin Ham after two seasons. Despite leading the team to the Western Conference finals in 2023, Ham’s tenure included a 90-74 record and a 9-12 playoff record since taking over from Frank Vogel in 2022.
