The president of Spanish La Liga – Javier Tebas, spoke about the upcoming increase of clubs in the group stage of the Champions League.
He admires the decision to allow other teams to join the tournament, but believes that the very system under which the tournament is held needs to be reformed.
“In 2024, there will be a new model of the Champions League, but work must begin on a different type of format that will allow a return to the roots of the tournament. That is, to gather as many champions as possible from all over Europe. Despite the fact that I represent La Liga, I will say that four Spanish clubs is not the best solution for the Champions League. The same goes for Serie A, the Bundesliga, the Premier League.”, he said.
“The clubs that play in the competition earn so much that there is a very big difference between them and the other clubs in the domestic leagues. It was a wrong move that in 2016 even more places in the Champions League were given to clubs from the major championships,” Tebas told Mundo Deportivo. From the 2024/25 season, the number of participants in the Champions League will increase from 32 to 36.
