The US was the better team throughout as it was expected from them, but they were still unable to overcome stubborn and dedicated Latvians.
It was the Baltic country that struck first with a great combination from the Bukarts brothers, which ended in Roberts Bukerts scoring a power-play goal in the first period.
The Americans replied in an instant as they drew the score level through Rocco Grimaldi just two minutes later.
At 16:08 Latvia was once again in front thanks to Janis Jaks. Grimaldi slotted his second goal to draw the US once again level.
The Americans found themselves in front in the third period with Matt Coronato picking up a loose puck and firing it into the net. But the Latvians were not to be written off as they drew the game with Kristians Rubins to send the game into overtime.
There Latvia was clynical and precise and deservedly emerged victorious in a memorable victory.
