The Premier League, other top European leagues, and the global players’ union Fifpro are set to launch legal action against FIFA, accusing the world governing body of “abuse of dominance” in football. The European Leagues, representing 39 leagues and 1,130 clubs across 33 countries, has announced plans to file a complaint with the European Commission to safeguard player welfare.

In a statement, Fifpro expressed concerns over the current international calendar, describing it as “beyond saturation,” “unsustainable for national leagues,” and a “risk for the health of players.” They criticized FIFA for prioritizing its own competitions and commercial interests over its responsibilities as a governing body, adversely affecting national leagues’ economic interests and players’ welfare.
“FIFA’s decisions over the last years have repeatedly favoured its own competitions and commercial interests, neglected its responsibilities as a governing body, and harmed the economic interests of national leagues and the welfare of players,” the statement read. “Legal action is now the only responsible step for European leagues and player unions to protect football, its ecosystem and its workforce.”

Fifpro also highlighted FIFA’s refusal to include national leagues and player unions in its decision-making process, despite calls for a transparent process concerning the international match calendar.
The European Leagues organization includes the English Football League, Scottish Professional Football League, Serie A, and the Bundesliga. La Liga, while not a member, is joining the legal action.
