LeBron James’ long-term future in the NBA remains uncertain, with the Los Angeles Lakers superstar keeping all options open beyond the 2025-26 season. The four-time champion could remain in Los Angeles, opt for free agency, or even retire once his current contract expires.
NBA insider Shams Charania addressed the topic on NBA Today, relaying the message of Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, who is James’ longtime agent.

“I did speak to his agent, Rich Paul, at Klutch Sports today,” Charania said. “And he told me, ‘It’s important not to worry about the future when it comes to LeBron James. Just appreciate the present and also maximizing his present.’ And that onus potentially falling on the Lakers and what team they put around him.”
The numbers show James is still producing at an elite level. In 2024-25, he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game. Despite finishing with a 50-32 record and claiming the third seed in the West, the Lakers fell at the first hurdle in the playoffs, losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
This summer, James opted into his $52.6 million player option for 2025-26. Paul later clarified that the move wasn’t tied to an ultimatum but reiterated his client’s desire to win — and for the Lakers to make the most of what could be James’ final years in the league.
