Right from the get-go Pep Guardiola’s team started strong as the Citizens were looking for the opening goal. Their attempts were soon rewarded as the home team were given a penalty inside 22 minutes for a handball.
Up stepped Haaland and with power and precision the Norwegian put the ball into the back of the net.
Barely 2 minutes had passed, as Haaland found himself in the scoresheet again, this time heading a deflected shot by the post from Kevin De Bruyne.
Right on the brink of half time, the Norwegian was at it again, as a goalline clearance from a Leipzig defender rather fortunately landed on the striker feet. That way the 22-year old completed his hattrick before the half-time whistle.
At the beginning of the second half not much changed, as Ilkay Gundogan made it 4-0 in the 49th minute. Haaland added two more to his tally in quick succesion in the 53th and 57th minute to make the night even more miserable for Leipzig. Kevin De Bruyne finished off the German team with an injury time goal.
With his 5 goals Haaland becomes the fastest and youngest player to reach 30 goals in Europe’s elite club competition. He is also the 3rd player in Champions league history to score 5 goals in a game, a feat, accomplished only by Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano.
The 22-year old goal machine is now on 39 goals for the campaign in all competition, which no other City player has ever accomplished. He currently sits with 5 hat-tricks (including this night sensational five goals), which is three more than any other player from the top 5 leagues.
