George Kirby allowed two runs in six solid innings, while Teoscar Hernández was busy homering, doubling and scoring three times to help his team en route to victory.
Hernández doubled the scoring in his first at-bat and added another one after Jarred Kelenic’s unconvincing single. Hernández followed in the fourth inning with his fourth homer of the season to center field off St. Louis starter Steven Matz.
He also reached the base during Seattle’s sixth inning despite a strikeout.
“I saw the ball going away. I was really mad, though, that I strike out, but I changed right away, put my head down and ran hard to first,” Hernandez said after the game.
Paul Sewald also played a key role as he pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
This was a vital win for the Mariners as they had found themselves in a difficult spot after three straight defeats.
