Veteran cyclist Mark Cavendish has announced that he will be retiring from cycling at the end of this season, which may see him become the record holder for the most stage wins at Tour de France.
“Cycling has been my life for over 25 years. I have lived an absolute dream,” Cavendish said.
“I’ve absolutely loved racing every kilometer of this race so far, so I feel it’s the perfect time to say it’s my final Giro d’Italia and 2023 will be my final season as a professional cyclist,” he added.
His run in Giro d’Italia has been hampered by bad turn of events, mainly rain. He had 2 attempts to sprint to an 18th victory, but both were compromised by late crashes. He also finished 3rd on the 11th stage last week.
The Briton has the opportunity to set the record for most stage win at Tour de France, which starts in July.
