The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded for a former player – getting back defenseman Ryan McDonagh in an exchange with the Predators today.
Tampa Bay sent a 2025 2nd-round draft selection and 2024 7th-round pick to Nashville for the defenseman and the Oilers’ 2024 4th-round selection.

The Lightning traded Ryan in the past – for defenseman Philippe Myers and forward Grant Mismash – to the Predators 2 years ago. It was a salary cap dump Tampa Bay had to make during the offseason in 2022 despite how crucial McDonagh had been on their back end through Stanley Cup championship runs in 2020 and 2021.
Ryan was originally traded to the Lightning by the Rangers in 2018 as part of a huge trade that featured J.T. Miller. Ryan inked a 7-year, over 47 million-dollar deal extension with Tampa Bay that summer and went on to produce a career-best campaign in 2018-19 with 9 goals and 46 points in 82 matches.
