McLaren bosses want the F1 team to continue using Mercedes engines and the two sides are currently “seriously advanced” in talks over a new deal.
Following the announcement that Aston Martin will work with Honda from 2026 onwards, there has been speculation that McLaren could become a Red Bull Powertrains and Ford customer, fueled by Zac Brown’s visit to Milton Keynes. McLaren uses Mercedes engines from the 2021 season and most likely the new contract will be a fact very soon.
“A few months ago we had talks with Red Bull, but that was part of our research into what’s on the powertrain market for the 2026 season,” McLaren team principal Andrea Stella confirmed. “At the moment we are well advanced in our negotiations with HPP (Mercedes’ powertrain division), so we are no longer negotiating with Red Bull.”, he explained.
