McLaren boss Zak Brown has called on Formula One management to ensure the track restrictions fiasco that marred the Austrian Grand Prix will never happen again.
Drivers were penalized all weekend at the Red Bull Ring for crossing the white lines, and the final standings for Sunday’s race were not released until five hours after the finish. Eight of the 20 participants on the starting grid received sanctions from the FIA, with Lewis Hamilton even losing one place and dropping from seventh to eighth.
World champion Max Verstappen accused race director Nils Wittich of making the sport’s stars look like “amateurs”. In total, more than 100 laps were deleted during Sunday’s race. The FIA found about 1,200 violations of the rules, which also led to various penalties.
“It definitely wasn’t ideal what happened, obviously. We should have done a better job. We knew it was going to be a problem on Friday and yet we just watched it happen. We have to make sure it never happens again, and that we take steps to prevent it,” Brown added.
“I take my hat off to the FIA for dealing with the problem, but it shouldn’t happen again. We can’t have a race and five hours later make changes to the results,” the McLaren boss added.
