Mercedes AMG boss Toto Wolff commented after the Belgian Grand Prix that the W14’s old problems of straight-end bouncing and overheating tires had returned, preventing Lewis Hamilton and George Russell from making their way forward at Spa.
“Our rivals are Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren, as well as Sergio Perez – explained Toto Wolff. “We all seem to be on the same path of car development, but at Spa one car had a big advantage – sometimes by half a second per lap when Max attacked at the start of each set of laps with the new tyres.”
“We will find a solution to the problems, I hope it will be sooner – he added – I looked at the telemetry from the cars, I also talked to the drivers and the main problem was the bouncing of the cars – this has been haunting us since last year. At every turn, our car bounced again. Lewis had to back off the gas at corners that are usually taken at full throttle. Cars jump on the straights, tires overheat when braking, old problems are back.”, Wolff said.
