Mesut Ozil has announced publicly that he is retiring from proffesional football mid-way through the season.
The former Germany international, who lifted the World Cup back in 2014, signed for Turkish side for Istanbil Basaksehir last summer.
However, his spell hasn’t gone smooth sailing as he made only eight apperances, most of which as a substitute, due to heavy injury problems.
Therefore it is no surprise the German has decided to call it a day.
Ozil announced the news on his Instagram profile in a statement that read:
“Hello everyone, After thoughtful consideration, l’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football.”
“I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity.”
“It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions,” he added.
Ozil is regarded as one of the most creative playmakers of his generation, with the 34-year old earning success both at Real Madrid and Arsenal, winning 1 La Liga title, 1 Copa del Rey with Los Blancos, and 4 FA Cup trophies with the Gunners.
The highlight of his career is undoubtedly the World Cup success in Brazil 2014, where he was an instrumental part of the German squad that went on to clinch its fourth World Cup title.
