Minnesota Wild fired coach Dean Evason and assistant Bob Woods on Monday after losing 14 of their first 19 games of the season. General manager Bill Guerin announced the change and appointed John Hynes as the new coach.
Evason, 59, entered his fourth season as Minnesota’s coach as he replaced Bruce Boudreau in February 2020 mid-season.
“Dean has done an excellent job in his time in Minnesota as the team’s head coach. I am very grateful for his solid work. I also want to thank Bob for his contributions during his time as an assistant. I wish Dean, Bob and their families the best good in the future,” said the manager.

Evason is the second NHL coach fired this season after the Edmonton Oilers fired Jay Woodcroft and replaced him with Chris Knoblauch. Edmonton won four of seven games after that. Matt Boldy, who scored 31 goals for Minnesota last season, has just one in 12 games in the first year of his seven-year, $49 million contract, and the team’s highest-paid player, Kiril Kaprizov, who is paid 9 million a year, has 6 hits in 19 matches.
