The 36-year-old Brit was on a roll as he beat Max Purcell in the second round and was set to face Jannik Sinner in the last 16.
However, an unexpected pain forced him to walk away to his and the crowd disappointment.
“I feel like I’ve let you down.” Said Murray, addressing the fans.
“This might be my last time playing here as well. So to finish like this feels rubbish.”
It is Murray 7th time in his career, where he is forced to withdraw. A similar injury forced him to adandon Wimbledon last month.
Sinner, therefore, qualifies without playing and will face Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals.
