Grand Slam record holder Rafael Nadal said he does not know when he will return to court, casting a shadow over his expected appearance at next month’s Monte Carlo tournament.
Nadal, who has a total of 22 titles from the world’s four biggest tournaments, has not played since the Australian Open in January when he suffered a thigh injury.
Two weeks ago, Monte Carlo Masters tournament director said Nadal was the first tennis player to register for the competition, which starts on April 8.
“I’m following my recovery plan, but I can’t commit to a time frame when I’ll be able to play again. That’s the truth. Right now I’m in a phase of increasing the workload. If I knew when I would be back on court, I would announce it, but I don’t know. I can’t confirm that I will play in Monte Carlo. It’s day by day and I prefer to talk , when something is absolutely certain,” Nadal explained.
