Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from this month’s US Open, citing his inability to compete at full capacity. The 38-year-old Spaniard, who recently lost to Novak Djokovic in the Paris Olympic singles and reached the doubles quarter-finals with partner Carlos Alcaraz, has only participated in the US Open once since 2019.
Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories.
I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time.
Thanks… pic.twitter.com/FluGRWUzIp— Rafa Nadal (@RafaelNadal) August 7, 2024
Nadal did not specify any particular injury or health issues but stated that he had decided against competing in New York. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed his fondness for the US Open, mentioning the “amazing memories” he has there and his regret at missing the “electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe.” Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion with four US Open titles, emphasized that he would miss the atmosphere and competition of the tournament.
Despite his withdrawal from the US Open, Nadal plans to participate in the Laver Cup in Berlin in September. Earlier this year, Nadal hinted at the possibility of retiring later in 2024, though he has not confirmed any definite plans. He skipped the Australian Open in January due to injury and did not participate in Wimbledon to focus on the Olympics.
