The superstar, who joined the Saudi Arabian league this summer, was tied with Pele, who netted 77 goals for Brazil, but now Neymar is solo at the top with 79 goals in 125 matches for the national team.
“I never even dreamed about holding this record. I want to be clear that Pele is a better player than me,” Neymar shared after the match. “I always wanted to make my own story and leave my mark on the history of Brazilian football and the national team. Today, I can be proud because I fulfill my dream.”
The Al Hilal striker’s record-breaking goal came after a low cross into the penalty box, which Neymar netted from close range. He used Pele’s celebration after scoring the goal.
