Noah Lyles can now proudly claim the title of the “World’s Fastest Man” after winning gold in the men’s 100m race in a dramatic photo finish on Sunday.
Lyles clocked a new personal best of 9.79 seconds, narrowly beating Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by a mere five-thousandths of a second after a review.

At 27 years old, Lyles is the reigning 100m world and U.S. champion, but this Olympic gold solidifies his status as the fastest man in the world. Despite his dominance, he did not compete in the 100m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after finishing seventh in the U.S. trials final. It was only last year that he began to focus intently on the 100m, setting his sights on Olympic gold in Paris.
Lyles’ victory marks the first time an American man has won the Olympic 100m since Justin Gatlin in 2004. The event was dominated by Usain Bolt, who won gold in 2008, 2012, and 2016.
