The British team got their 50th 1-2 finish in their history, Russell takes another third place

Oscar Piastri has firmly inserted himself into the F1 title fight after securing a dominant victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, marking his third career win and his first from pole position in a full-length race.

The McLaren driver controlled proceedings at the Shanghai International Circuit, making up for the disappointment of his Australian Grand Prix mishap last week, where a late error in heavy rain cost him a near-certain podium. This time, Piastri crossed the line 9.748 seconds ahead of Lando Norris, securing McLaren’s 50th one-two finish in history.

The race was not without late drama, as Norris had to manage critical brake issues in the closing laps but held on to finish 1.3s ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes. Russell remains in the title hunt, now just nine points behind Norris.

Four-time champion Max Verstappen could only manage fourth place, meaning Norris extends his lead over the Red Bull driver to eight points in the standings.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took fifth place, despite suffering front-wing damage after early contact with team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the Turn 1-2 sequence. The FIA deemed the damage not severe enough for a mandatory stop, allowing Leclerc to continue his one-stop strategy, similar to the top four finishers.

Hamilton, meanwhile, attempted an aggressive two-stop strategy, but it failed to deliver a podium challenge, leaving the 40-year-old Briton in sixth place.
