Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick, netting his 880th, 881st, and 882nd career goals, as the Washington Capitals secured a 7-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. With this performance, Ovechkin moved to within 13 goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL record while helping his team reclaim the top spot in the league standings.

Ovechkin’s first goal came midway through the second period when he fired a wrist shot past Calvin Pickard off a pass from Dylan Strome. He added his second on the power play 10 minutes later and sealed the hat trick with an empty-net goal in the final minutes. Pickard became the 181st goaltender Ovechkin has scored against, extending his own NHL record. His 134th game-winning goal also tied Jaromir Jagr for the most in league history.
Tom Wilson, Jakob Chychrun, Connor McMichael, and Dylan Strome also found the net for the Capitals, while Charlie Lindgren made 22 saves. Washington has now won back-to-back games since the 4 Nations Face-Off break, outscoring the Oilers and Penguins 15-6.
Edmonton suffered its third consecutive loss despite Leon Draisaitl scoring his league-leading 42nd goal of the season. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jeff Skinner added late goals, but the game was already out of reach. Pickard allowed six goals on 32 shots as the Oilers struggled to keep up.
