The New England Patriots told the reserve QB Joshua Dobbs of their intention to cut him.
Joshua, who is 31 years old, served as the backup QB behind Drake Maye in the past campaign. Dobbs was scheduled to earn a base salary of over 3 million dollars this year and carried almost 5 million dollars in salary cap charges. The contract featured per-match bonuses.
New England’s decision comes after the organization inked number 3 QB Tommy DeVito to a 2-year contract with a base value of almost 4.5 million dollars after not tendering him as a restricted free agent. Tommy’s contract features incentives that could increase its value to almost 7.5 million dollars.
So, the Pats project to bump DeVito, on a cheaper deal, to the backup quarterback role. A QB3 is expected to be signed in the upcoming months.
Dobbs’ most impressive moment last season came in a 31-13 victory against the Titans on October 19th when Drake left early in the 3rd quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. However, Tommy appeared in just 4 matches in the past campaign, mostly to kneel on the ball at the end of wins.
