Christian Horner has firmly stated his opinion that Sergio Perez cannot be blamed for the turn 1 incident, which ended the Mexican’s dreams of a home race victory.
Perez collided with the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc as he tried to go around the outside, but turned in too sharply, probably not realizing that there was another car on the inside (that of his teammate Max Verstappen).
“He was very emotional as you can imagine, but he is a racing driver – he had to go for it.” Horner said. “You can’t place the blame on any of the drivers, three into one is always going to be tough into one corner. And he had a rocket ship start, probably his best start of the year. And he was going for it in front of his home crowd.”
Perez is now under threat of losing P2 in the championship after Hamilton’s great P2 in the race saw him cut the Mexican’s points advantage into half.
