Manchester United have announced on Friday that center-back Phil Jones will leave the club at the end of the season after his current contract expires.
Jones was bought from Blackburn Rovers as a teenager back in 2011 and was tipped to become one of United’s most prominent figures.
However, injuries have plagued his stint with the Red Devils with the defender featuring only five times in the last 3 seasons overall.
“My time at United has been nothing short of incredible,” Jones wrote in a public later to the fans.
“I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played amongst. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could. I did everything the medical team asked of me.”
“I never left a stone unturned in the pursuit of living my dream and having the opportunity to represent Manchester United on the pitch.”
Jones has made 229 appearances for United, scoring 27 times. He remains the only outfield player in the Red Devils’ squad from their last Premier League-winning campaign in 2012-13. After his departure, goalkeeper David De Gea will remain the sole remaining player from the Sir Alex Ferguson’s era.
