The Russian staged a stunning comeback in the third set

Andrey Rublev lifted his maiden Masters 1000 title after defeating Holger Rune 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the Monte Carlo final.

The Russian was up against it as he had to overcome a 1-4 deficit in the third set and secure the win in 1 hour and 34 minutes.

“I have tears,” the emotional Rublev said after the game.

“I don’t know what to say to be honest. I don’t know. I am just happy, finally. I have been struggling so much to win this freaking Masters 1000 tournament. Finally losing 4-1, Love-30, saving break points, thinking there is no chance to win, and somehow I did it.”

The 25-year old improved on his previous Masters finals appearances as he registered two losses to Stefanos Tsitsipas last year and to Alexander Zverev in Cincinnati in 2021.

With this win Rublev has climbed seven spots to fifth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin after his successful run.

Rune, on the other hand, was aiming to clinch his second ATP Masters 1000 crown after defeating five Top 10 opponents en route to the title in Paris last year. The Dane was the first teenager to reach the final in Monte-Carlo since Rafael Nadal achieved that feat in 2006, when he lifted the trophy.

He has climbed two spots to No. 7 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings following this year’s run to the final.
