Aryna Sabalenka was stunned in the 1/4 finals of the Miami Open as she succumbed to a straight set defeat 6-4, 6-4 to Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
It was Cirstea’s first win over a top-three ranked opponent. She will play either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals.
“I’m a bit speechless,” she said after the match.
“I came out knowing it would be a really tough match. Aryna hits so hard so I knew I had to hold my ground.”
“I’m very happy with my performance today. It’s a bit unexpected to be honest.”
The world No. 74 finds herself in an impressive run of form, as she is yet to lose a set in five-match streak at Miami, which also saw her eliminate world No.4 Caroline Garcia.
The Romanian had a great run at the Indian Wells tournament as well as she eventually crashed out in the quarter-finals to world No.1 Iga Swiatek.
On the men’s side the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz has been postponed for Thursday due to heavy rain, while world No.10 Jannik Sinner managed to get his game underway with two hours delay as he progressed to the semi-finals.
