Carlos Sainz expects his former team McLaren to be ahead of Ferrari in the remaining races until the end of the Formula 1 season. However, the Spaniard told the media ahead of the US Grand Prix in Austin that 79 points between the two teams might be enough for Ferrari to salvage third place in the constructors’ standings.
McLaren have made a poor start to the season but have taken 104 points from the last three races compared to Ferrari’s 70, and are now just 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Martin.
“I think if we don’t have a problem of not being able to start or finish, we will be able to put them behind us,” hopes Sainz, who was unable to start in Qatar due to problems with the fuel system.
“That doesn’t mean they won’t try to beat us,” he clarified. “I think they can beat us in most races until the end of the season because they have a very fast car and they seem to be the only ones who can worry Red Bull at some point,” said Sainz.
