Salt Lake City marked a significant milestone on Thursday by formally submitting its bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympics, describing the occasion as a “monumental day.” Despite being the sole contender for the 2034 Games, Salt Lake City organizers approached the bidding process with caution before officially submitting the application to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In November, Salt Lake City 2034 and France 2030 were selected as the preferred hosts for the Winter Olympics.
The Preferred Host Submission presented Salt Lake’s Games vision, concept, site plans, sustainability studies, and financial information. Additional details, including federal, state, and local government guarantees, as well as venue use, lodging, and marketing rights agreements, are scheduled to be submitted in late March. Salt Lake City, having previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002, initially aimed for the 2030 Games but reconsidered due to its proximity to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Fraser Bullock, President and CEO of the Salt Lake City – Utah Committee for the Games (SLC-UT), expressed the significance of the day, stating, “Today was such a monumental day in our journey to bring the Games back to Utah. Since the 2002 Games, sport has been a legacy in Utah that has helped define who we are. Looking ahead to 2034, we are uniting under a vision to truly elevate our communities, winter sport, and the Games experience.”
