The San Antonio Spurs are dismissing veteran PG Cameron Payne, helping him to become part of a contending franchise that can provide him with a larger role.
Should Payne clear waivers in the next few days, the point guard will have a significant market of contending organizations wanting to sign him – especially after his impressive performance during the playoffs with the Phoenix Suns during the campaign.
San Antonio acquired Payne, a 2025 second-round draft selection, and 5.6 million dollars during the offseason in an exchange with Phoenix. The NBA franchise from Texas have several young point guards they’re planning to build for the future, and Cameron will be more useful if he joins a contenting organization.
Payne, almost 30, did a phenomenal job as a backup point guard to Chris Paul with the Suns over the last 3 seasons. Cameron notched 31 points in Game 6 of the 2023 Western Conference ½ finals vs. the Denver Nuggets, and the guard started the final 4 matches of the playoffs for Phoenix.
Cameron Payne is finalizing a deal to join The Los Angeles Lakers, per ESPN
