Chris Johnston will also receive bonuses for the matches he plays as he can earn more money than his contract is worth.
Sean would have become an unrestricted free agent next month.
Monahan played 25 matches for the Canadian NHL franchise last campaign, as he suffered mostly from injuries during the season. Chris finished with 6 goals and 11 assists in his debut year with the Habs.
He was playing his last campaign of a 7-year, almost 45 million dollars deal he inked with the Calgary Flames in 2016.
