The Italian was looking certain to lose the final against Medvedev, but made a stunning comeback

In a remarkable final at the Australian Open on Sunday, Jannik Sinner staged a memorable comeback to defeat Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3, securing his inaugural Grand Slam title. This victory marked a significant moment, as Sinner became the first non-Novak Djokovic, non-Rafa Nadal, and non-Roger Federer player to claim the Australian Open title in a decade. Moreover, it was the first men’s title clash at Rod Laver Arena since 2005 that did not involve any of the “Big Three.”

Entering the match as the third seed, Medvedev demonstrated his prowess by swiftly securing the opening set with a double break. Notably, he arrived in the final as the first player since Pete Sampras nearly three decades ago to achieve such a feat after multiple comebacks from being two sets down.

Despite Sinner missing a crucial forehand pass in the 10th game of the third set, he rebounded with a break to claim the set, altering the course of the match. The Italian player showcased resilience, saving a breakpoint at 3-3 in a tense fourth set with a powerful ace. Sinner seized the opportunity to break Medvedev’s serve late in the set, leveling the match at two sets each.

In the decisive fifth set, a crucial break gave Sinner a 4-2 lead, setting the stage for his ultimate triumph. The victory not only marked Sinner’s maiden Grand Slam title but also added a new chapter to the Australian Open history by breaking the decade-long dominance of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer.
