Napoli’s head-coach Luciano Spalletti will be taking an year off from footballing duties and steps away from the managerial role, the club’s president announced.
Spalletti took over Napoli in July 2021 and finished 3rd in his debut season before leading them to a historic first title in 33 years in his second year after a dominant display all campaign.
Speaking to the media, Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis said he respects the 64-year-old decision.
“He’s a free man, he’s given us something and I thank him, it’s right that he does what he wants.” Laurentiis said.
With Spalletti taking a sabbatical the club is in urgent search for a new manager. Prime candidate for the time being is ex-Barcelona and Spain boss Luis Enrique, who has been without a job after the end of the World Cup.
