The Cottagers were the superior team in the first half and an unfortunate own goal by Spurs’ new signing Micky van de Ven gave the home side a deserved lead.
Ange Postecoglou men struck back in the second half after Richarlison finally found the back of the net with his first goal of the season.
Neither team could find a winner before the end, despite the handful of opportunities that arose and therefore, it had to be penalties that settled the matter.
It was Davinson Sanchez, who proved to be the main sinner, as he was the only one, who failed to convert from the penalty spot.
In the end, it was Tete who scored the decisive spot-kick to send the home side through.
