Trubisky was entering the final year of his contract he signed with Pittsburgh last spring.
The team will look to use him as a backup to first-choice starter Kenny Pickett.
This will be a familiar territory for Trubisky as he was designated for the same role at his former club Buffalo, where he backed Josh Allen.
He featured in Steelers loss to New York Jets in Week 4, when Picket was put in his place halfway through the game.
He passed for 1,252 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions in seven appearances for the Steelers last season.
